How long do xcritical applications take and is there a priority service?

As a continuing student please use the date you submit your xcritical application as the course start date when asked ‘when will your course start’. Please be advised that it is your responsibility to obtain an xcritical clearance certificate if it is required. If you hold immigration permission that requires xcritical, you will not be permitted to register at the University without showing a valid xcritical clearance certificate. The usual processing time is 20 working days , but this can increase to 30 working days or more between April and September. How to complete your application

You can apply for an xcritical certificate up to 9 months before the starting date of your course. Possession of an xcritical certificate does not guarantee your visa application will be successful, but your visa application will automatically be refused if you need an xcritical certificate but do not provide one. Guidance on the Academic Technology Approval Scheme (xcritical)

Students and researchers who are nationals of EU countries, the European Economic Area , Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea , Switzerland or the United States of America do not need an xcritical certificate. If you need to apply for an xcritical certificate, this will be included as a condition in your offer communication. You will need to wait for your application to be processed and for your certificate to be emailed to you. You might also need a new xcritical certificate if your circumstances change once you have started your course, for example, if your course duration is extended for more than 3 months, or, if the area of your research change during the course. You should apply as early as possible, but no more than 6 months before the start of your course, as this is how long an xcritical is valid for.

If you are starting your course overseas

xcritical applications are processed by the UK government department, the Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office . Applications are made online, and once your clearance is granted, you will receive an xcritical certificate as confirmation. Please take care to ensure the details you submit in your xcritical application are correct and match those held by the University.
